Some of the actors, led by Emeka Ike, to this effect approached the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bamanga Tukur, on Saturday, appealing for the party’s blessings.
Mr Ike told the PDP chairman that the celebrities intended to mobilise the Nigerian youth, especially at the grassroots, towards peace and the unity of Nigeria.
He cited the general insecurity, overheating of the polity, youth restiveness, crises in the education sector, mass unemployment, increasing wave of gang violence, prostitution and crises within the polity as reasons why the peace campaign became a necessity.
He said the PDP, as Nigeria and Africa’s largest political party, was one of their main targets, adding that the celebrities wanted the ruling party to pull through its internal crises to enable the government of President Goodluck Jonathan get more focused on its Transformation Agenda.
The stars, Mr. Ike said, had developed a module for infusing the agenda of responsiveness and national interest in the core programmes of all political office holders and stakeholders such that, henceforth, their focus would be more on addressing the needs and yearnings of the Nigerian youths.
The Nollywood actor said football players such as Celestine Babayaro, and music stars, including 2-Face Idibia, had been enlisted in the Youth Agenda for Peace In Nigeria, and would be helpful in mobilising other stars.
He told the PDP National Chairman that Nigerians would be amazed at the outcome of the peace rally.
Mr Ike disclosed that the campaign would start with a press conference in Abuja on Monday, followed by peace rallies in each of the geo-political zones of the federation.
“We would round up by mobilising the Nigerian youth including the Nollywood, football and music stars in our country to Maiduguri for Campaign on Peace, as we have prepared for the rally, which, to us, would shock Nigerians and make the country stand still,” he said.
Mr Tukur, in his response, expressed delight in the resolve by the Nollywood stars to champion the cause of peace and national reconciliation.
He expressed conviction in the ability of stars to help repackage Nigeria in line with the PDP’s desire, stressing that Nigeria required such interventions from its youth.
He told the Nollywood stars that he would give the required inspiration to make their endeavour sail smoothly and urged them to strive to be global citizens like their counterparts in music and football.
“I am aware that you people have conquered Africa because your movies are watched across Africa and the rest of the world. Today, I want to encourage you to take ownership of your successes and move over to be global citizens,” Mr Tukur said.
